Toddler Education: Turn the Terrible Twos Into Terrific Twos

dsquared on April 19, 2018

We’ve all heard of the dreaded terrible twos. We know about those endless months of social development. We’ve learned about all the behavioral problems that little ones show. It’s common to think of that period of development as a nightmare. But, we want to give you some helpful toddler education tips on how to make the terrible twos into terrific twos! The growth and development of your kids can be a really enjoyable process!

Understanding Toddler Education is Key

The first thing you’ve got to do is understand! Approach your growing child knowing that they are just like all of us — still learning about the world around us. Your little one is in between stages. Two-year-olds are kind of stuck in the middle. They’re not really babies anymore but they’re also not as old and developed as, say, 6 or 7 year olds. So, these little ones are struggling to grow up. Since they are still so young, they don’t always know exactly how to communicate what they’re feeling. That’s part of the reason their behaviors change so drastically and they become a little more challenging to deal with. Hopefully, having an understanding of how your child is feeling during this stage can help you create a “terrific twos” experience!

Tips for the Terrific Twos and Toddler Education

Let’s go ahead and end the “terrible twos” right now. We want to make sure every stage in your child’s growth is special, including his or her second birthday and beyond! So, how do you make this period terrific? Glad you asked! Here are some ideas for you:

Toddler Education: Turn the Terrible Twos Into Terrific TwosCommunication toddler education. Let your kids know that you don’t support physically or verbally negative behaviors. You don’t allow hitting or biting or screaming. There are better ways to communicate. Transform terrible twos into terrific twos by encouraging your little ones to find new ways of expressing their emotions.

Snack and nap time are important! Young children begin to fidget and get frustrated when they’re hungry or tired. So, if you have to be out and about during the day, make sure you pack some good snacks for your two-year-old. If your daughter is used to eating snack at a certain time, create a “terrific twos” experience by making sure she still gets her snack, even if you guys are running errands together. The same goes for nap time.

Be firm. Yes, there’s a way to be firm while still being a loving parent. All you need to do is show your children that you still care for them even if you say “no” sometimes. Here’s a thought. Say your son has a temper tantrum when you say “we’re not buying that toy today.” What should you do? Buying the toy will only encourage him to behave the same way the next time he wants something. Instead, show him love by taking him to a quieter place, away from others. Let him know that you’re interested in making him feel better. You can try hugging him until he grows quiet. Speak to him in a calm and soothing voice so that he knows you’re not angry with him. Remember, if you show frustration, he probably will do the same. Likewise, if you remain calm, he’ll learn to do that, too.
