Ah, toddlers! There are so many new and wonderful things going on in their little bodies and minds. They’re exploring so much more of the world around them and learning more about their own abilities. If you’re the parent of a toddler, you know just how exciting this phase of childhood can be! Your little one is changing in so many ways. Toddlers are at that “in-between” age; they aren’t babies anymore but they’re also just trying to figure things out as they near the school age. So, this is a great time for you to learn a little more about toddler developmental milestones. You can gain a little more knowledge about the changes you can expect to see in your child’s life! This can help you, as a parent, to work on ways you can nourish your child’s growth and development.
It’s important to know as much as you can about your little one’s growth. It can help you to better understand the changes your child is experiencing. And, it can help you to work towards making sure they are in an environment that encourages their growth and development! Basically, the more you learn about your developing child, the better you can understand his or her needs at this point in life. Let’s talk a little bit about these toddler developmental milestones, shall we?
Toddlers are children between the ages of about 12-36 months. In other words, between your child’s first and fourth birthdays, he or she is considered to be a toddler! Children within this age group definitely learn a lot more about how to navigate through their world. They also begin to exercise a lot of their abilities. When you think about toddlers, you probably think about potty training, terrible twos, and learning to walk more steadily. It’s true that all of these things are often associated with kids this age. And, yes, they are commonly referred to as toddler developmental milestones. But, there are more things you can look forward to seeing in your toddler as he or she grows! Between the ages of 1 and 3, kids experience a lot of really important milestones. They develop physically, emotionally, and mentally. Let’s take a look at some of those developments!
Physical milestones: Your child is learning better coordination. He or she is learning to move around a lot better. Walking, climbing, and jumping are all becoming a part of your toddler’s life! Your child may also begin dragging and pulling things like small chairs or toys. You’ll also see your little one squatting and bending.
Emotional milestones: Toddlers may begin to feel more attached to their parents. They might enjoy spending more time with you. Kids this age often enjoy hearing you read to them and being close to you.
Cognitive/Mental milestones: Many toddlers begin to understand and be able to follow simple instructions. They can understand and form simple sentences. Toddlers may also start to ask “what”, “where”, and “why” questions more often.
There are a lot of things you can do to help facilitate your toddler’s growth. For one, you can provide lots of space where they can use their new skills of running and moving around! Playtime at the park might be in order! You can also read to them and encourage them to ask questions. Have lots of quality time with your toddler to foster his or her emotional needs. And, make sure your little one spends time in a wonderful learning environment when you’re apart during the day. A good learning center will encourage your little ones as they grow, cultivate those toddler developmental milestones, and give you peace in knowing your kids are in good hands during the day!
